THE COURSE:

Classes are pre-recorded and uploaded every Monday morning so you don’t have to be available at a specific time – you can watch them when you want, and they remain accessible for the rest of the school year until the end of summer (free access in July and August), as do all the other materials. We work on every part of the process from the start so that you can organise your own study. That way no one will have to wait to start preparing the syllabus or studying the topics, which is what tends to happen in other academies. We also offer monthly live classes online, which are useful for question-and-answer sessions and moral support. These will be organised according to student and teacher availability.

Many people believe that by using this online approach they will miss out on the interaction of a normal class, but this is absolutely not the case, and given the recent pandemic, we have seen that online teaching is the only guaranteed approach where you won’t have to worry about classes being cancelled. Technology allows us to do wonderful things these days.

I encourage interaction between my students and with me in the class forum or via email, where you can ask questions and receive answers, post videos or links, give or receive motivation or simply say hi.  I use the forum in an educational way for various activities including introduction posts to get to know each other, surveys to ask questions, check knowledge of a specific topic or to provoke discussion.  You can participate in this as much or as little as you wish or as time allows.  I aim to respond quickly so that you don’t have to wait until the following week for a response.

Regarding the syllabus and units, the key to passing this part of the exam is to create your own, original syllabus. Being an active secondary school teacher, I am fully up to date with the legal requirements of the syllabus. We’ll work on that step by step from the beginning. I’ll provide you with the contents page which we will add to each week, going through everything thoroughly. Obviously the syllabus content and laws change in different regions and we will pay great attention to this – I won’t just give you something to copy and paste without explaining it – I’ll make sure you know exactly what you’re talking about and know how to read and interpret the legal documents and legislation, which will make you more confident in the presentation too.  I’ll show you examples of each part and give you templates and ideas – all based on my own LOMLOE syllabus, but guiding you so that you can prepare your own original syllabus and units.  Although I encourage interaction, I would never ask anyone to show their material to other students unless they wanted to.

Once we’ve finished working on the syllabus and units, we’ll move onto preparing the presentation of the syllabus and then the teaching units.  I have an extensive, well-prepared guide for this (video and written) which makes it a lot easier to prepare than you’d imagine and includes tips and tricks that wow the tribunal.  All my students who have presented and passed in the past few years have received high marks in the syllabus and unit presentation. My training doesn’t just include content but also coaching to understand exactly what the tribunal is looking for and tips from colleagues who have sat on tribunals in the past.

You will receive materials to prepare the 69 topics from the temario during the course. My philosophy has always been to make sure my candidates learn to write excellent essays and produce the topics themselves using my materials and plans, ensuring unique submissions on exam day to wow the tribunal, instead of the same old topics regurgitated by academias and editorials. I still recommend this as the most effective approach.

Nevertheless, experience has taught me that life can often get in the way and not everyone has the time to produce every essay from scratch. Therefore, I also offer full original essay examples which you can use as a basis to adapt for your own needs and help speed the process up when you’re strapped for time.

As far as the practical or language part of the exam is concerned, we’ll be working on translations, text analysis, use of English, listening comprehension, creative writing, reading comprehension, phonetics, teaching situations, and general everyday English. This part of the exam varies depending on the region, but we cover everything just in case, as there can be changes made from year to year.

These activities will be explained and then corrected the following week in class, with detailed explanations on the class videos as well as written answer sheets and examples, with follow-up in the forums. Each week, we will also be working on full practical exams using the most recent real “past papers” from exams across Spain. I usually provide short and long activities for you to choose from, depending on the time you have available.

I understand it can be complicated preparing these exams, especially as most of us have to balance our time between work, family and other issues. In fact, many of my students work full time and have young children, yet this hasn’t stopped the majority of them from obtaining their teaching positions. My firm belief is that the oposiciones system does not have to be as stressful or confusing as many people find it. In fact, with effective preparation, we can convert the whole process into an enjoyable learning experience, with guidance and support every step of the way.

The only complaint I’ve had about the course is that a lot of people don’t have time to do all of the work each week, and some people have dropped out because of this. So, if you sign up, I do ask you to be dedicated to your studies from the outset and intend to complete the whole course. I can also assure you that even though I provide a lot of work, I’ll also help you to organise yourself and your study calendar realistically to do what you can each week, and not get stressed out by not completing everything.

TOPICS

I don’t provide typical pre-written topics like many academies and publishers do, because the whole philosophy behind my preparation is that you have to prepare them yourself and they must be original and creative, so that’s why I’ll teach you how to write great essays (not only structure but also improving language and writing techniques at the same time). I’ll provide you with a plan which includes information, links and tips for building the essay, examples of introductions and conclusions, catchy intro sentences etc, and from there you’ll build your own essay. I’ll also give you some full essay examples which you can use to help speed the process up when you’re strapped for time.
